Gyno-grief.com
gyno-grief was a concept birthed in a warehouse in Oxford in 2024. its conception was much earlier. gyno-grief as concept, recognizes the unique ways in which women (cis and trans) experience grief and loss within the context of their lived experiences and also [fundamentally] metaphysically and existentially. 'gyno-grief' is epistemologically novel, in its acknowledgement of the importance of discourse in constructing what are, and what are not, grievable experiences. the objective [if it were so intentionally conceived] of gyno-grief, is to problematise the normalising of certain grief responses and the nullifying or pathologizing of others. here grief is not weighted. not subject to hierarchy. gyno-grief is a container of testimony - all testimony.
gyno-grief. this radically inclusive container, is derived from, and dependant on, communities of knowledge: women circulating knowledge about the experiences of their own reproductive loss and grief. it is a messy combination of performative discourse [as if we can ever escape it], existential longing, material loss, psychological pain, joy and ambivalence. it is discourse, words, stories that are not just an exercise in solidarity building [albeit utopian] or 'speaking out', it is an epistemological endeavour. what does it mean to resist dominant and restrictive (bio)political/social tropes about right and wrong, normal, abnormal, true, false, legitimated and pathologized, forms of grief? this is a conversation that we not only owe each other, but owe ourselves.
